The Vecht river

The river Vecht, somtimes also called the Utrecht Vecht, is a Dutch river running through the provinces of Utrecht and North Holland. It dates from 600 BC as a part of the estuary of the river Rhine and the delta of the IJ. The Vecht starts near the Weerd locks in the city of Utrecht and runs for 40 kilometers to the fortified town of Muiden and to the IJmeer. Along the way is runs through the villages of Maarssen, Breukelen, Loenen and Weesp.
In Medieval times it was a very important shipping route from the IJsselmeer area in Holland and the Rhine river giving acces to Germany.
In the 17th century, the Golden Age, succesful Amsterdam merchants had luxurious estates build along the Vecht.
Nowadays the river is primarily used for pleasure boating.
