In the northern sand area, the subsoil consists of boulder clay, which was deposited during the penultimate ice age (Saale). Since boulder clay allows water to pass through it poorly, swamps developed in many places and raised bogs formed locally.
Already in the course of the 17th century, peat extraction (digging for peat for the production of turf) in parts of Friesland was characterized by significant scaling up and an increasing influence of capital. The peat lords banded together into a company (a speculative enterprise that provided the necessary capital for peat extraction).
Drachtstercompagnie originally is a peat colony. A peat colony is a settlement that arose because workers moved to an area where raised bog was being excavated for the production of turf.
Drachtstercompagnie owes both its name and its surroundings to the peat extraction. Much of the peat extraction structure in the landscape is still intact, such as the districts and alder banks.
