Cortenbach Castle

Cortenbach Castle is one of the five castles of Voerendaal. The castle is located northeast of Voerendaal and is currently privately owned and not open to the public.

The original medieval fortress, of which the remains form the current castle, and the associated castle farm both date back to the 14th century. The only remnants of the fortress include two round towers made of local Kunrader stone, presumably the corner towers of the outer bailey. Additionally, a part of the curtain wall has survived. The current castle was built around 1713 as a manor house by the Aachen trader Herman Lamberts, who had been lord of Cortenbach since 1682, after he had the old one demolished. It was largely rebuilt again in 1776. In 1869, the widow of the last Dutch male descendant of the De Lamberts de Cortenbach family passed away in the castle.
