Schootsvelden Sittard

In the Middle Ages, the shooting field surrounded the walls of the fortified town of Sittard: an open space used by artillery in case of impending attacks and to have an unobstructed view around the city. Therefore, no construction was allowed in this area. After the destruction of Sittard in 1677, allotment gardens were established in the shooting fields. Later, the area was partially built upon.

Meanwhile, most buildings have been demolished again to partially restore the historical situation. The shooting fields now form a park-like border around the city center. From here (Odasingel), you have a beautiful view of the city wall and the historic city center with its beautiful churches, monasteries, and monumental buildings.
