Shortly after the turn of the last century, new mills were built in various places in Limburg during the French Period and some existing mills were given a different function.
The seigneurial right, a privilege whereby the lord of the manor only allowed the lord of the seigneury to build a mill, was abolished by the French.
Citizens could build windmills with the permission of the new government and everyone was free to grind on a mill that seemed favorable to him or her.
