Hidden among the polders and the Vliet lies the former Fort Henricus. From 1627, Fort Henricus in Steenbergen protected the harbor and the lock, thus ending the sieges of this city. Fort Henricus was capable of sheltering as many as 450 soldiers and ensured that Steenbergen was an impregnable fortress. With 11.5 hectares, this fort was one of the largest in the Southwest of the Republic of the Netherlands. And you can discover it all by yourself! Walk over the bridge to the fort, climb the lookout tower, and gaze over the landscape of the polders and church towers.
