Old Market / Cloister Square

The Oude Markt in Sittard is a street in the center of the city. The street is located within the historic city walls of Sittard and runs from the Markt, the central square of the city center, to the Kloosterplein, which forms the western extension after a right-angle turn. It is a fairly narrow street and has a length of about 150 meters.

The Oude Markt is one of the oldest streets in Sittard. During the establishment of the settlement, the street was part of an important east-west route. There was a motte here on which the residence of the lord of Sittard was located in the eleventh century, at the site where the "Huis op de Berg" is now situated. Given the street name, the market was held here in the early history of the city before it was moved to the current Markt.

On the Oude Markt, which is part of the protected cityscape, there are several monumental buildings. These include the Basilica of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, the Mariapark, the former Dominican monastery, and the former Ursuline convent. Today, apartments and a hotel are situated in these monasteries. Additionally, there is another hotel and some 19th-century residential houses located in the street.
