St. Peter's Tire Church

More than 1000 years ago, a small Romanesque tuff stone church stood on the site of this late Gothic church. Remains of these have been found during later restorations.

Around 1300, the building acquired more Gothic features.
The tower that now proudly overlooks the surrounding land has often been a source of concern. It was ravaged by fire in 1448 and in 1615.
Unfortunately, the organ and the archive were also lost.

The fact that the spire was crooked for decades was of less concern, but that after the restoration in 2015 it was discovered that the problem had only gotten worse, the people of Bekenaars did not expect. Fortunately, the problem has finally been solved and everything is back in the "lead".

The tower is one of the most beautiful in the Brabant region.
The church has been in the hands of the Protestants for a long time. At that time, many statues and the stained glass windows were removed, the choir stalls and pulpits were allowed to remain in place and still adorn the interior of the church.

The entrance to the church is through the tower portal where the bell ropes can also be found. At funerals, the bells are still rung by hand by women.
