Hilvarenbeek ) is a town and municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of North Brabant. The village is located at an altitude of 17 meters. Hilvarenbeek was created at the confluence of two streams, the Hilverbeek and the Zuiderbeek, which was called the Platte Beek from that confluence. In documents around 1150 Hilvarenbeek is mentioned for the first time under the name Beke, and Beika, the addition Hilvaren appears in 1304 as Hildewarenbeecke, in 1331 as Beke sancte Hildewardis and in 1350 as Hildewairdenbeke, Hilvarembeke. According to a late tradition, the addition goes back to the handmaid of Saint Oda, Hildeware, also called Hilsondis, who is said to have founded a church here. The place name is not derived from the Hilver stream, it is the other way around. A completely different explanation is based on the toponym 'hil', which means height.
