Monument Shipyard Vuijk & Sons.

At this location, until the 1970s, Shipyard A. Vuijk & Sons was established, which had a good reputation in the construction of inland and ocean-going vessels. A. Vuijk & Sons was a shipyard from 1872 until 1979, located at what is now Vuykpark in Capelle aan den IJssel.

The monument represents the bow of a ship on the slipway. The maples next to the slipway symbolically represent the hull of a ship over time. The long walkway represents a ship's slipway, just as it existed there until 1990.

The completion of the Nieuwe Waterweg in 1872 stimulated shipbuilding in the region. On July 19, 1873, Adrianus Vuijk purchased an existing ship slip on the Hollandse IJssel. The technical development of shipbuilding allowed for increasingly larger vessels, ultimately making them too big for the yard, leading to its eventual closure. On May 2, 1980, A. Vuijk & Sons closed its doors after the launching of the last two ships, the Cotrans 6 and 7; the last of the approximately 900 ships that Vuijk built over 108 years. In the 1970s, the ships being built became so large that the hull protruded over the dyke on the slipway (see photos inside the restaurant hall). Opposite the access road to the restaurant, the head office of the yard can still be seen.
