The lakes were created in the early 1970s as a result of sand extraction for the A16/E19 motorway from Breda to Antwerp and for housing in Breda. Since the late 1970s, the municipality of Breda has developed the area as a recreational area. The lakes are very popular with divers because the water is very clear. It is one of the clearest freshwater lakes in the Netherlands. However, there is little life in the lake because of the low acidity and high pH value of the water. The lake is max. 18 meters deep.
