Die Seen entstanden Anfang der 70er Jahre aufgrund von Sandabbau für die Autobahn A16/E19 von Breda nach Antwerpen und für den Wohnungsbau in Breda. Seit Ende der 70er Jahre hat die Gemeinde Breda das Gebiet als Erholungsgebiet entwickelt. Die Seen sind bei Tauchern sehr beliebt, da das Wasser sehr klar ist. Es ist einer der klarsten Süßwasserseen in den Niederlanden. Es gibt jedoch wenig Leben im See aufgrund des niedrigen pH-Wertes und des hohen pH-Wertes des Wassers. Der See ist max. 18 Meter tief.
