Dieteren is a village in the so-called 'taille' of the Dutch province of Limburg, located between the cores of Roosteren and Susteren, in the municipality of Echt-Susteren. With 790 inhabitants, it is the smallest core of the municipality.
Dieteren has certainly existed since the beginning of the 13th century; the oldest known written mention of the place name dates from the year 1213. Archaeological finds have further shown that the area must have been inhabited by people many centuries earlier. Nothing is clear about the meaning and/or origin of the place name, but it may possibly be compared to that of the Gelderland village of Dieren, given the similarities between the old forms. It may then be derived from the name Diederik.
