Dieteren es un pueblo en la llamada 'taille' de la provincia neerlandesa de Limburgo, situado entre los núcleos de Roosteren y Susteren, en el municipio de Echt-Susteren. Con 790 habitantes, es el núcleo más pequeño del municipio.
Dieteren ha existido con certeza desde principios del siglo XIII; la mención escrita más antigua conocida del nombre del lugar data del año 1213. Los hallazgos arqueológicos han demostrado además que el área debió haber sido habitada por personas muchos siglos antes. No está claro el significado y/o el origen del nombre del lugar, pero puede ser posible compararlo con el del pueblo Gelderse Dieren, a la vista de las similitudes entre las formas antiguas. Posiblemente se deriva del nombre Diederik.
