MAKKUM

The Golden Age of Makkum began in the 17th century and lasted until the end of the 18th century. Makkum was an important center of industry and trade, including shipyards, brickworks, tile factories, and shell lime kilns. Besides ordinary fishing, shell fishing was significant.
The shell lime kilns were the main pillars of Makkum's prosperity. Many people were employed here. The produced masonry lime was of high quality and was used, among other things, in the construction of houses in Amsterdam. The transport of raw materials and finished products was done by ship, and as a result, shipping and shipbuilding flourished.
The 19th century brought a decline due to the silting up of the former Zuiderzee, making the port of Makkum no longer accessible.
Makkum has an urban structure dating from the 17th century. Especially near the lock, there are monumental merchant houses that date back to Makkum's period of prosperity.
The nature reserves along the IJsselmeer coast (Makkumerwaard) are renowned for their many birds and the great variety of plants.
