The nieuweweg between the Breukelveensche plas (silent lake) and Tienhovense Plassen. The Breukelveenscheplas is virtually ungrown open pool of water. The Tienhovense Plassen are very different. You will see a beautiful area with pet holes (or trekking holes as they are called here), laying fields and marshland. Wetland could be created when, after the cessation of peat extraction, the capholes slowly grew closed by clusters of aquatic plants, roots and plant remains. This formed vibrating peat, which is quite rare because it can only form in pet holes with agonizing, nutrient-poor water. The vibrating peat often grows together with the reeds along the edges of the laying fields, creating new land on which swamp forests grow. This process from water to land is called landfall. Each phase in this process has its own plant and animal species. In order to preserve the nature of the different stages of the landing process, nature development is carried out here. Where necessary, nature managers cut down trees, mow the reeds and pull open silted cap holes again. If nature were to take its course here, a uniform swamp forest area would be created with willows, alders and some birches.
