The town hall of Weesp

It looks like a miniature version of the palace on the Dam, this town hall of Weesp. It is a prime status symbol, built with the money earned in the beer and jenever industry. Architect Jacob Otten Husly built the town hall in classical style between 1772 and 1776. You might know him as the architect of Felix Meritis on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. He constructed the town hall from sandstone, a very valuable type of stone that had to be imported. In the triangular pediment at the top, two lions hold the coat of arms of Weesp.
If possible, step inside for a glimpse of the 'Vierschaar.' Behind the gate, the bailiff and aldermen condemned criminals. The blindfolded 17th-century Lady Justice symbolizes a just verdict. Imagine yourself here as a prisoner among the rats and the straw bed and take a selfie in the pillory!
