The Hedel railway bridge is the middle and oldest of the three bridges over the Meuse at 's-Hertogenbosch and Hedel. The cross-river connection, consisting of two single-track bridges, which lies east of the Hedel bridge from 1937 and west of the Maas bridge near Empel of the A2, was built in 1870.
In 1860 it was decided that the Utrecht - Boxtel railway line would be built. It ran from Utrecht SS station to Boxtel station. At Boxtel, the railway line would connect to the Breda - Maastricht railway line. To this end, three large bridges had to be built: over the Lek, the Waal and the Maas. In 1868 the bridge over the Lek was completed and on 1 November 1869 the railway bridge at Zaltbommel was completed, allowing trains from Utrecht to run as far as Hedel station. On 1 September 1870, the bridge at Hedel was inaugurated, establishing the railway connection between Utrecht and 's-Hertogenbosch.
