The Brouwerssluis is a drainage sluice in the Brouwersdam. The sluice was put into operation in 1978 and connects the Grevelingenmeer with the North Sea.
When the construction of the Brouwersdam was completed in 1971, the sea arm Grevelingen was separated from the sea, and the Grevelingenmeer was created. The disappearance of the tidal action and the gradual freshening of the lake led to the extinction of many animal species, and others replaced them. In the original plans, the lake was to be completely freshened to serve as a freshwater reservoir for agriculture, among other purposes. In the course of the 1970s, it was decided to halt the freshening and to restore the salt content of the Grevelingenmeer to the level it was at before the closure. To this end, a connection with the North Sea was necessary, and it was decided to construct the Brouwerssluis. Construction of the sluice began in 1974. On May 31, 1974, the tender for the construction of a construction pit in the southern dam in the Brouwershavense Gat took place, and after this was established, the construction of the sluice itself was put out to tender on May 16, 1975. The completion took place on June 1, 1978, and the sluice was subsequently put into operation in July. Nowadays, the sluice in the Brouwersdam is open throughout the year, except for 30 days during the period from September to December. Sport fishermen make use of the sluice, and particularly in spring, herring is fished for. Gray seals can often be seen on the sea side of the sluice, where they also hunt for fish.
