Red bridge

The red bridge, named for its color, provides a connection for pedestrians between the Europaboulevard and the Amstelpark at the height of the Van Nijenrodeweg. There are more connections over the water, but this one is built exclusively for pedestrians. The bridge was completed in 2005/2006 based on a design by ipv Delft and artist Stefan Strauss. They were inspired by pedestrian bridges in the United States. The bridge, with its red color, is a striking sight. Moreover, the shape of the bridge is unusual. It has a conventional railing on the south side. Between steel balusters, red wooden planks run as railings to a usable height. On the north side, the railing also serves as the supporting structure for a roof that runs above the actual bridge. This railing and roof are also made of steel and red-painted wood. Furthermore, on the east side of the bridge, a kind of tunnel has been created in line with both railings and roof, allowing the bridge to be closed half an hour before sunset and reopened at 8:00.
