The first written sources about the Stulp date back to the 14th century. The area was part of the possessions of the Lord of Drakenburg, the bailiff of Utrecht. He was even knighted in 1346.
The Stulp is located on the border of Utrecht and North Holland, which previously caused border issues. It was private property for centuries.
In 1964, De Tulp was purchased by the State, and in 1966 it came under the management of Staatsbosbeheer.
Initially, the area consisted of heathlands, with a rise here and there for the purpose of hunting. One such rise is the Konijnenberg near Lage Vuursche. Over the years, most of the heath has been pushed back by forests. That's what happens to heath when humans do not intervene.
The Stulp is very hilly. This is a consequence of the time when it was a large sand drift. This occurred because sheep grazed too much, allowing the wind to take over. Staatsbosbeheer has put a stop to the sand drift.
