The Loyal Waghter

The Trouwe Waghter is a seesaw mill east of the village of Tienhoven in the Dutch province of Utrecht. The mill owes its name to the role it played for people in hiding during the 2nd World War. The miller at the time transmitted signals by means of various wick positions.

The mill was built in 1832 to replace two older mills that pumped the water board elsewhere. As a result of peat extraction and the creation of the Loosdrechtse Plassen, drainage in the eastern part of the polder became necessary and this mill was built. Until 1948, the mill drained the polder by means of a paddle wheel. In 1950 the mill passed into private hands and the interior was broken out and the mill was converted into a weekend residence. In 1960 the mill came into the hands of Natuurmonumenten and this organization had the mill restored in 1970. Since then, the mill can be admired occasionally on a voluntary basis. The mill was restored in 2011.
The mill has rods with a length of more than 20 meters that are equipped with the Old Dutch fencing with sails.
