Cronesteyn Castle was a castle southeast of Leiden in Zoeterwoude, on the east side of the Roomburger Watering near Lammen. The castle was built around 1300 as a fortified farm. Nowadays it is located in the public polder park Cronesteyn and only the canal around the courtyard can be seen.
Cronesteyn Castle, like many castles in the Netherlands, originated from a more or less fortified farm. That was around 1300 and it was then called die Brouck and also Heer Wouterswerf. The later name Cronesteyn, written in various ways, is found in written sources from the beginning of the sixteenth century, and is derived from the Cronenburg family.
