Theater The Park

Theater Het Park is a theater in the city of Hoorn. It is the third theater of that name after the Parkzaal on the Achterom by architect A.C. Bleijs from 1876 and the theater on the Westerdijk by H.M. Koldewey from 1969.

On July 3, 1996, the municipal council decided to build a new theater at Hoornse Hop just outside the former Westerpoort. Years of political struggles surrounding the renovation/new construction of the theater and the designation of the site of the demolished Witte Badhuis on the Westerdijk preceded this decision. Four architectural firms submitted a design to a jury, which chose one and placed the other three ex aequo in third place. This posed a problem for the municipality, as the municipal council had decided to leave the final choice of the design to the public. Now there was nothing to choose from, so the mayor and aldermen decided to present another design as a second choice.
