Kieldiep

The Kieldiep is a canal in the Province of Groningen, between Hoogezand and Annerveenschekanaal. It is a side canal of the Winschoterdiep. Initially, the northern part of the canal, from Hoogezand to De Kiel, was called the Kielsterdiep, while the southern part was referred to as the Hoofddiep of Windeweer. It was only from around 1950 that the name Kieldiep was found on maps for the entire route.

The Kieldiep was dug on behalf of the city of Groningen starting in 1647 for the purpose of the reclamation of the peat to the east of Kropswolde. By around 1738, the canal had reached Boven Kiel. The city originally wanted to extend the canal to Bareveld to create the shortest connection with the Stadskanaal. However, since a number of landowners near Bareveld did not want to cooperate with this, the city council ultimately opted for a connection of the Kielsterdiep with the Grevelingskanaal.
