Zuidewijn Castle

Zuidewijn Castle is a castle in Vrijhoeve-Capelle, in the Dutch province of North Brabant. The castle is located in the hamlet of Hooge Vaart.

The old Zuidewijn castle was located on the Oude Maasje near Besoijen. The first mentioned is Johannes van Strijen, who lived around 1290. A document from 1363 states that Jan van Beloys, lord of Schoonhoven and stadtholder of Albrecht of Bavaria, the ambocht of the Hoeke van der Zijdwinne in and out of the wind, with vere, with tithe, with viskeriën, with voghelien and with all... would bequeath to Haedwien Janswijf van Bueren and to the children she already had or would have from Jan van Buren, if the present vassal, Willem Wildenesse, had no heirs. Jan van Buren was William's uncle and on his death, in 1403, Jan van Buren did indeed receive the fief. In 1420 the property passed to Willem van Besoyen, then to Floris van Wijtvliet who was a descendant of Jan van Wijnvliet. As a result of the St. Elizabeth's Flood of 1421, the inhabitants had to give up their castle Zuidewijn. They then went to live in De Stenen Camer, and the name Zuidewijn was transferred to this. This Stone Camer was an already existing 15th-century nobleman's house, on the site of the current castle.
