Liberation Fire Protection Safe

The liberation fire is a national Dutch symbol commemorating the end of the Second World War on May 5 1945.

Since 1948, the fire has been lit every year on May 5 at 0:00, Liberation Day, at the 5 Mei Plein in Wageningen. Runners' groups light a torch from this fire, after which it is brought back to their own hometown in a relay.

Until 2011, the fire was lit at the 5 May square with a torch that was ignited at a continuously burning flame in the Vattenfall gas station at Droevendaalsesteeg in Wageningen. Since 2011, the liberation fire has been continuously burning at the Liberation Fire Monument near the Aula (monument designed by Hans Roebers).

Since then, the little flame serves as a backup assurance (you could say a fire safe).
