Museum Het Bolwerk shows how the residents of the Zeelandic Flanders border area defended themselves against hostile attacks over the centuries. The story begins with the Roman castellum in Aardenburg and ends with the bunkers of World War II. The focus of the collection lies on the Staats-Spanish Lines, a unique complex of fortified cities, forts, redoubts, and lines from the time of the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648). Unique, because here part of the origin history of the Netherlands is still visible and tangible in the landscape.
