The Camel of the Peel is a viewing platform in the form of a hump that can be climbed via a staircase, providing a view of the Zwarte Plak Heath. This small heathland area lies behind a 3-meter high parabolic sand dune (formed during the last ice age). The gravel bike path that runs alongside the sand dune hardly offers a view of the small heathland area.
The name of the viewing platform is inspired by a Scots pine, the only pre-logging tree in the far vicinity. This tree amidst the vast open heath was a landmark for shepherds and other visitors to the Sevenum Heath. Due to its single-humped dromedary silhouette, it was called the Camel Tree.
