Kwakel Bridge

The Kwakel Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in Edam. The bridge connects the Kwakelsteeg with the Doelenstraat. The narrow wooden footbridge was built in the 18th century. On a map by Joan Blaeu, of which the original copperplate was made by Blaeu around 1650 and published by Frederick de Wit after 1698, the Kwakel Bridge is already marked. The bridge is located at the end of the Scheepmakersdijk and spans the Boerenverdriet. The bridge is a drawbridge and is also referred to as a wipbridge or klapbridge. The upper beam of the bridge is weighted down with a triangular end. With a chain, this part can be pulled down, causing the bridge deck to be raised on the other side of the bridge with the help of a yoke using two chains. Next to the Kwakel Bridge, there is a small shipyard at the Boerenverdriet.
