Old-Drimmelen

Old Drimmelen is located in the polder between Hooge Zwaluwe, Made, and the place Drimmelen, on the road of the same name. Old Drimmelen has 9 houses.

In 1421, the village of Drimmelen was completely flooded during the Elizabeth flood. Most likely, a new village gradually arose in that place, which was also called Drimmelen. In addition, another core was established nearby in 1645, also named Drimmelen, by an existing lock. Soon, a union arose between the two villages, and the existing Drimmelen was henceforth called Old Drimmelen, while the other was named New Drimmelen. In 1730, a large fire destroyed most of Old Drimmelen. Until 1792, baptisms and marriages were held in the church of Old Drimmelen. But in 1793, this church was sold for demolition. Thus, from that year on, baptisms and marriages were conducted in New Drimmelen. Around the beginning of the nineteenth century, the union of Old and New Drimmelen merged with Made. This remained until 1997, when Made, Drimmelen, Terheijden, Wagenberg, and Hooge and Lage Zwaluwe were merged into the new municipality of Made, which would later be called Drimmelen. In the twentieth century, Drimmelen, as New Drimmelen was now called, developed into a tourist place with a modern marina. Old Drimmelen has remained a polder hamlet that has not grown.
