The Tengnagel

“It’s starting to blow harder,” say the skippers Piet and Joost. Foam caps on the Joppe, we are overtaken by a sailing yacht with billowing sails. At Tengnagel, the men must moor on the low bank and set sail again, but they don’t mind doing that.

This is a remarkable elongated narrow ‘land tongue’ with the Joppe on one side and the Zijl on the other. A place where not many people come. Sheep are grazing, and it’s teeming with geese. And oystercatchers. From the jetty, the path goes right towards the Strengen, the island to which Tengnagel is attached. But if you have time, first take a left to the tip of the land tongue. There you’ll find – because of the view – the best bench in the wide vicinity. To the left is the Joppe and the Zwanburgerpolder with a good view of the farm De Eenzaamheid, in the distance the other Kagerplassen, and to the right the notorious Kaagsociëteit with the starting tower. It’s at its best with a strong breeze and many sailboats on the water.
