Slot Assumburg is the oldest still existing castle of Heemskerk and dates back to the 13th century. The name comes from the hamlet of Assum, which is located between Heemskerk and Uitgeest. During a major renovation in 1546, many materials from the Ruins of Brederode (Santpoort-Zuid) were used. During World War II, Slot Assumburg served as a base for the Germans and as a detention center for about thirty political prisoners.
At first glance, Slot Assumburg appears to be a solid castle, but the reality is different. The thin walls would not have withstood a siege. Such a building is generally referred to as a "scenery castle."
The castle has had many noble and civil owners and is currently used as a hostel.
Landscape Garden
Around the castle, a landscape garden was established in 2011, where guided tours are provided by the Historical Society Heemskerk. In the garden, there is also a marble statue by artist Elisabet Stienstra. The 150 old high-stem fruit trees (mainly apples and pears) in the orchard have a long history and were already documented before 1850.
