Outside Megen flows the Maas, and within the city gates, the impressive fortress history comes very close. In the 16th century, the fortress was mainly plagued by fire and war. For years, battles were fought over the sovereignty of Megen. For centuries it was an independent county that was also not part of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. Only in 1800 did Megen truly become part of Brabant again, and later, in 1814, also of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
