The Resting Farmer and the Three Tribes Trail
On the left is the hardwood sculpture The Resting Farmer, made by Bert Leenheer. The sculpture unmistakably resembles a seated pensive farmer, but is in fact a shell. A fascinating depiction of the former agricultural character of Kockengen.
On the side wall of the house behind the statue is the coat of arms of Kockengen: a blue shield with six Andrew's crosses. This is where the external council and wedding hall of Kockengen was located, the town hall was located on the Kerkplein.
Kockengen has a long history of mergers and redivisions and still has several hamlets: Gieltjesdorp, Laag-Nieuwkoop, Portengen, Portengense brug and Spengen.
In 1989, after a municipal reorganization, Kockengen was merged with Breukelen, after which the Breukel coat of arms was used. In 2011, this municipality, together with Maarssen and Loenen, merged into the new municipality of Stichtse Vecht.
The square with playground was built as a connection between the old village and the new building on the east side of the Heicop from the 70s and 80s.
'Connection' is an appropriate word in Kockengen: the village has a lively club life and many cultural activities such as an art route and the Koetstock open-air music festival at swimming and recreation park De Koet.
Route: Go up the Korte Kerkweg, past the Heicop. Walk to the first lamppost.
