Vijlenberg, The Netherlands

The Vijlenberg or Vijlenerberg is a hill in the Dutch province of Limburg in the municipality of Vaals. The church village of Vijlen has been built on the hill and is home to the Sint-Martinuskerk.In in the 19th century, limestone was extracted in the Vijlenberg for the cement industry at the cement factory Aachen-Vijlener Portland Cement Werk. The cement factory was located on the hill north of the village centre at the junction with the Vijlenstraat and the limestone was quarried east of it in a quarry on top of the hill. In 1899, a second factory, the Dutch Portland Cement Factory, was opened to the west of the first factory in the valley at the foot of the hill. For this factory, limestone was extracted underground in the Vijlenberg and later in an open-pit quarry where the limestone was transported to the factory via a tunnel.
