Linie den Hout

The Linie van Den Hout is a nature reserve owned by the Dutch Forestry Commission. Together with the Spinolaschans and the Linie van de Munnikenhof, the area covers 42 ha. The line is located between Den Hout and Made.
It is a dilapidated system of earthen walls and moats, built in 1701 by Menno van Coehoorn during the time of the War of the Spanish Succession. She was part of the Southern Frontier. The line, because of its zigzag shape, was called a tiled line. It was part of a system of defensive works between Breda and Geertruidenberg. In the end, three redoubts were built here.
From 1830 onwards, the Ministry of Defence gave permission to plant the previously bare ramparts with oaks. The farmers used these for convenience wood. Thus an ancient forest was created. In 2004, part of the oak trees in the east of the redoubt were cut down to make the zigzag shape more visible again.
