Molenveld

Old sources already report a name of a place that resembles Exloo around 1346. Its meaning is oak forest. It is a real tourist village with old farms and beautiful natural beauty in the area. Southwest of Exloo is the beautiful nature reserve 'Het Molenveld'.

There is no mill in and around Exloo. The mill was not on the field itself, but on the outskirts of Exloo, on the corner of what is now the Hoofdstraat and the Boslaan. In the past, the heathlands were much larger and there were fewer buildings, from the mill you looked over the Es to the heath, the mill field and vice versa.

It is not entirely clear how long the mill stood there, but it was probably placed before 1832. The mill was used for grinding grist and has only stood there for a few years. In the writings, the mill had disappeared around 1850.

During a walk on the Molenveld, you can come across a sheep herd. From April to October, the shepherd travels daily at 10 a.m. with about 250 Drenthe heath sheep from the sheepfold in the middle of the village to the beautiful Molenveld nature reserve. Sometimes the flock stays overnight in a wolf grid, but usually the sheep go back to the sheepfold in the middle of the village of Exloo. It is a beautiful sight when the herd walks across the heath or on the way through the village to or from the sheepfold.
