From the Boerenschans, the State besiegers controlled the shipping traffic over the Bossche Sloot and protected the southern Hollandsche Dijk. The fortification, recognizable as an elevation in the landscape, was one of the largest of the nine line fortifications. It was approximately 575 meters long and 340 meters wide. The Boerenschans is located in the territory of Vlijmen, in the municipality of Heusden. Within the military encampments in the line, Protestant field preachers would have been active, such as the former Vlijmen preacher and then Heusden pastor Gisbertus Voetius. Vlijmen was then the closest Dutch village and Heusden the closest Dutch city. The logistically important fortress of Heusden was regarded as "TLANTS STERCKTE."
