St. Aldegundis Church

The Sint-Aldegundis Church is the parish church of Buggenum, located at Dorpsstraat 38, in the Dutch municipality of Leudal.

Already in a charter from 956, there was mention of a church at this location. Remains of this church, in the form of post holes, were found in 1948 during archaeological research. It is believed to have been a three-nave wooden church that did not possess a tower and was dated before the year 1000. The church is thought to have been destroyed by fire, after which a stone church was built with a western tower, on a foundation of pebbles. This foundation also contained many remains of Roman structures. No excavations could be carried out under the 15th-century choir, which had been spared from the violence of war, so it is unknown what its predecessor looked like.
