Hydepark Orangery

The normally inaccessible Oranjerie Hydepark is a chic national monument located on a unique estate in Central Netherlands. In 1885, it was purchased by the Amsterdam banker Hendrik Maurits Jacobus van Loon. He immediately had an orangery built to protect his exclusive potted plants and trees from Southern Europe against the Dutch climate. The building was put into use in 1888.

Oranjerie Hydepark is symmetrically arranged and features three characteristic domes, which are interconnected by an open balustrade. It reminds us of the French palaces of Versailles. This is no coincidence, as architect Jean Nicolas Landré was inspired by the eclectic architectural style of the French Sun King Louis XIV. A striking feature on the exterior is the stunningly detailed sculpture atop the lantern of the middle dome. It represents Flora: the Roman goddess of flowers and plants.

In front of the Oranjerie lies an elegant formal garden with a pond and fountain. The wide berceau (hedge arch) extending from the pond once formed the sightline to Landhuis Hydepark, which was unfortunately completely destroyed during World War II. Fortunately, the Oranjerie itself escaped that fate!
