Prehistory in the Hoekse Kuilen

The Hoekse Kuilen is an area located at the edge of the cover sand ridge where Neerkant is also situated. The fact that there were human activities here in the Hoekse Kuilen in the prehistory was proven in 1969 by the discovery of flint artifacts from, among others, the Federmesser culture (Tjongerculture?). The Federmesser culture is a cultural group from about 13,900 to 12,850 years ago. The hunter-gatherers lived in a slightly warmer period during the last ice age. The tundra landscape had changed into grasslands and birch forests. These hunter-gatherers chose elevations in the landscape in a marshy or water-rich environment as locations for their camps.
