Junction route from Appelscha through the beautiful nature reserve Fochtelooerveen to Veenhuizen.

During the route you cycle past the lookout tower De Zeven. If you want to climb this lookout tower De Zeven, leave extra early, because there is also a lot to see in Veenhuizen.

Start with a visit to the Prison Museum and discover the world that Johannes van den Bosch had in mind when he founded the Colonies of Benevolence. Here you can also see how discipline took shape in the years that followed. With fun and exciting games for children. For example, experience what it is like to be locked up in a cage.

In 2021, UNESCO granted the Colonies of Benevolence the status of World Heritage. In addition to Veenhuizen, this also includes Frederiksoord, Wilhelminaoord and Wortel in Belgium. Frederiksoord and Wilhelminaoord are also easily accessible by bike from Appelscha, also recommended!
