The Drenthepad is a long-distance walk through the province of Drenthe, with a small excursion across the border! The fourth stage starts in Diever and crosses the border into Friesland in the Drents-Friese Wold. The stage ends in the touristy Appelscha. The last part of this stage runs through the Aekingerzand, better known as De Kale Duinen. These sand drifts attracted the first tourists to Appelscha around 1900. The name Appelscha is still known to many Dutch people, because of the school trips, the sports camps and the first-year students who experienced their first schaolkampen here.

On the Kale Duinen you will pass a lookout tower, which gives you a fantastic view over the sand drifts. When you arrive in Appelscha you will find an even higher point. On top of the 20m high Bosberg (the highest point in Friesland) is the 33m high Bosbergtoren. If you climb this, you can see almost the whole of the Northern Netherlands in good weather!

Appelscha is still the tourist centre of the region. You will find plenty of accommodation, restaurants, terraces and activities here. Partly due to the enormous network of cycling, walking, riding and other paths and routes, the region presents itself as "the Outdoor Sports Valhalla".
