Description by the author

Thanks to its enormous diversity and special natural values, the Maashorst is called the primeval area in Brabant. With an area of 3,500 hectares, De Maashorst is the largest contiguous nature reserve in North Brabant. It contains hundreds of plant species, nearly 150 bird species and more than 25 mammal species. The high concentration of flora and fauna makes your visit to this natural gem absolutely worthwhile.

"Marvel at traces of habitation from a distant past and spot the primeval inhabitants in this area"

With this Tour Maashorst you are assured of an adventurous bike ride. Spectacular archaeological finds have been made here, such as the urn field from the early Iron Age and the largest and richest royal grave in the Netherlands: the prince's grave of Oss. Do you want to marvel at these ancient treasures? Don't forget to get off your bike!

With an innate primal instinct, and a bit of luck, you are guaranteed to spot the primeval inhabitants of this area: the bison, Tauros or Exmoor pony. These three impressive grazers ensure that the natural landscape becomes as it once was: wild, pure and authentic. Don't forget your binoculars!

This cycle route was created in collaboration between VVV Noordoost-Brabant, Natuurcentrum De Maashorst and Programmabureau De Maashorst. Gonnie Versteeg, employee of Nature Center De Maashorst, recommends the cycling route:

"During the adventurous Rondje Maashorst you will discover what makes the primeval area in Brabant so special. Rich cultural history, rugged nature and the special phenomenon of pointing, De Maashorst has it all. During your trip you will come across a varied landscape with heaths, fens, drifting dunes and burial grounds. Traces of habitation from the distant past can still be visited here. With your natural primal instinct and a bit of luck, you might spot a Tauros, Exmoor pony or bison during your bike ride. Unique in the landscape is the pointing phenomenon. This result of the centuries-old Peel Boundary Fault can be found on your tour at the wijstgronden and in the stream valley of Slabroek. Follow your primal instinct and go!"
