A unique place
The historic Oudebildtdijk along the Frisian Wadden coast in Northwest Fryslân offers a dike of a story. This distinctive dike with its typical dike houses and monumental farms is the longest street in the Netherlands. The house numbers range from 1 to 1229. A place where imposing cloud formations, sunsets, and starry skies alternate in beauty and wonder.

Along the Oudebildtdijk, you will find many galleries. For centuries, artists have felt drawn to this expansive landscape. Even now, artists are still inspired by the natural and cultural-historical value of the Oudebildtdijk area.

Centuries of protection against the sea
Oudebildtdijk is a remarkable region that possesses its own character. It is the first sea dike that was constructed as a summer dike around 1200 and later raised to its current height in 1505. The dike was located in the municipality of 't Bildt, later region 't Bildt, and now municipality Waadhoeke.

The dike was raised in 1505 by residents of South Holland and Brabant who worked together with Frisian laborers. This is how Bildts originated as a Frisian mixed language. The Oudebildtdijk was built in one year with eight hundred workers. A few kilometers to the north, the Nieuwe Bildtdijk was constructed a century later, after which the old one became a sleepy dike. But the sea has always remained close. At night, in storms, and during inclement weather, it tries to reclaim the abandoned land.
