Rolde was the capital of Drenthe and until 1688 it was one of the three meeting places of the Etstool, the highest court of Drenthe that met annually. The present church with its impressive tower was built in the 15th century. Around 900, the first of three wooden churches was founded here. Around 1200, the first stone church was built, skipping the tuff period and using brick immediately. If it had been possible to travel this bike route in the Middle Ages, the impressive tower of the church would have been visible along the entire route (in nice weather). Next to the church are probably the two most famous hunebeds of Drenthe.
