Bourtange was a sand ridge in a vast marsh area, the Bourtanger Moor. The only passable road between the city of Groningen and Germany ran along the sand ridge. It's no wonder that Diederik Sonoy and Willem Lodewijk built a fortress there. The fortress of Bourtange was last reinforced in 1742 and thrived through agriculture, trade, military activities, and smuggling. Particularly, the Jewish community contributed to a vibrant middle class. During the war, a large part of the community was deported.
