With this cycle route through the Friesland of the Reformation you will see the historic city center of Franeker, the monument of Menno Simons in his birthplace, hidden church in Pingjum and some Mennonite churches, or their old location.

Itinerary

You start at Bicycle junction 9 On the parking lot you can park your car.

You cycle over the bridge and deviate from the route by turning right to the Noorderbolwerk . Here you can see on the left old Malthouse, a former hidden church.

You cycle back to Leeuwarderend and turn right. Over the water and past the Martinikerk. You cycle through the centre of the academic city of Franeker.

Of course you can always stop at one of the catering establishments or visit the Museum Martena.

At Junction 15 turn left into the Vijferstraat and cycle again over the water to the Harlingerweg to junction 16. Here you turn left to Kiesterzijl, cross the van Harinxma canal and then right to the Slachtedijk.

At the intersection at junction 96, continue straight on the Herbijumerweg towards Achlum, junction 32. From here you cycle to Arum on the Monnikenweg to junction 30. Here you can deviate from the route by turning left to the Sytzamaweg and getting a cup of coffee at the Herberg De Gekroonde Leeuw while the e-bike is charging or you turn right on the Sytzamaweg and then left to the Groenedijk, Hanialaan and left to the Nesserlaan (you deviate from the route here) to Mini camping De Nije Trije just outside Pingjum in the middle of the sturdy Fryske landscape.

When you go back to the route, turn right to the Riegeweg and then left to the Nijenhuisweg and left again onto the Pibemalaan, then right to the Kerkstraat and right to Grote Buren (you deviate from the route) Here you will find Het Schuilkerkje Strict and sober, the exhortations of the Mennonites give a good picture of the faith in the early days. When you cycle a bit back to the route over the Grote Buren you will arrive at the Mulierlaan. Continue cycling to junction 75 in Witmarsum. Here you deviate from the route by cycling straight ahead at the roundabout on the Pingjumerstraat left over the water immediately right again on the Ostend via the Molenweg along the water and left onto the Spinnekop , right onto De Tsjasker and onto Mouneplein. Here you can buy Mennobôle from Madame de Molenaar, bread named after Menno Simons.

You go back to De Tsjasker (left) and then turn right via Tsjerkelân, Oosterstraat right to Menno Simonsstraat. At It Fliet you will find the Monument of Menno Simons and the contours of the church.

You cycle back to the route via the Easthimmerwei in a northerly direction and turn right to the Arumerweg towards junctions 99 and 27. Here you turn right onto Allengaweg, Hizzaarderlaan towards Lollum. At the church turn left to Buren, Berghuizerweg to junction 28 straight on the Lollumerweg to junction 35 and there you turn right into Laakwerd towards Tzum. At junction 72, turn right over the water into the Holpijp , then right onto Franekerweg. You can stop at farm campsite Ny Herema, at the foot of the highest church tower in Friesland, in the mound village of Tzum.

You can also continue cycling and via Oostelijk Achterom, Nieuwbuursterweg, De Warren, turn right to the Plattedijk. At junction 38 turn left to the Felsumerleane, Cherkebuorren, Swachlumerleane turn right to the Laekwerterwei, and Spyk to junction 48. Here you turn right with the bend to the Sassingawei. This road becomes the Monsamabuorren and the Lewei. At junction 83, turn left onto It Sân towards Britswerd.

you now cycle on the Kleasterdyk, past a mound and its church and turn left to Froonackerdyk towards Wammert and turn left to It Hynstewead towards Easterlittens. Turn right onto the Bearderdyk and via the Gele Buorren turn left onto the Dekemawei in Baard and cross the bridge to junction 94.

The Dekemawei merges into the Meamert. At the roundabout, turn straight onto Froonackerdyk towards Winsum. Follow this road to Wjelsryp. Here you turn left to Westerein junction 3. At the Welsrijperweg turn left to Lutje Lollum. Here you continue your way via the street Lutje Lollum and turn right to the Tzummerweg towards Franeker.
