The area around Wielicska contains plenty of salt springs. Salt was used here since at least 3500 B.C..

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is classified and protected by UNESCO. This mine became a peice of art. The miners carved figures and a complete chapel out in salt.

The saltmines provided 1/3 op the revenue of the Polish Crown in the 16th & 17th century. The Crown brought special guests. The acoustics of the mine are spectacular. It resulted in 1830 in the Wieliczja Salt Mine Band, which stil exists.
